Andy already completed his stamina, for Ed there was only one left: the tired dive tow! He passed straight away, surprisingly, because this time Andy was his victim! Good job guys! |

Interesting Open Water Course by Fialka26-07-2010
 This week we had an interesting Open Water course @ Eden Beach. A group of 6 people, speaking 3 different languages, all learning for one certification. After 20 minutes introduction of the dive theory (thanks Alina for helping out with the Spanish), we jumped into the pool. Underwater the hand signal for “clear your mask” is the same in all 3 languages. But for some people it means only one thing…STRESS! But yes, you have to do it and yes, you are going to remove it and you are even going to swim without it. It’s just a technique and not that difficult, but scary….yes may be a little bit, the only thing to do is practice, practice, practice. And it’s worth it, with a clear mask and the beautiful viz @ Eden’s Rubble you can see a lot! The last 2 weeks we have seen an octopus, an eagle ray, turtles, reef squids, baby drum, tarpons, barracuda and a lot of moray eels. That we even found time to do all the skills of the open water course…, but we did and congrats to Jennifer, Austen, Amber, Nadine, Marianne and Neidy! I know for sure that removing the mask is now Marianne’s favorite thing to do. Also an instructor can learn something new every week, this week it was “het ezelsbruggetje” , the acronym for the buddy check:

Why would you jump in the water at night when it’s completely dark??? Because it’s a lot of fun!!! And very different than during the day, I even think you see more than during the day, because you focus on what you see in the beam of your torch light. Everything is hunting, you can even see a sea cucumber move. The thing is, go really really slow, take it easy and don’t be scared of huge big silver fish swimming next you. Not only the fish are hunting, also different kinds of the coral; orange cup coral, flower and star coral. You can see little tentacles everywhere. And the brittle stars are crawling away when you shine on them. The fire file clam turns out fire red in your torchlight or your flashlight. Fire worms are very active and the lobsters are outside of there caves. The parrotfish protect itself by making a mukesbubble around him. Don’t scare it too much because he will swim out of it and he can make only one a night. If you see small red eyes it’s the little shrimp shooting through the water. And if you hold your torch against your chest so it’s completely dark, wave your hand through the water and you will see the dust powder of Peter Pan‘s Tinker bell. Those are single celled algae’s lighting up because of the movement. In Holland we call it Zeevonk, in the past they called it Noctiluca Miliaris, thousend nightlights or sparkles of the sea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctiluca_scintillans Flower Coral |

Holland for World Champion!08-07-2010
This coming sunday, Holland is playing the FIFA World Cup finals against Spain. We all had a lot of fun during this tournament, cheering for the Dutch team but it doesn't get bigger then the finals! We invite you to come and join us at the Wannadive Hut to watch the game and shout the Dutchies to victory. The game starts at 2.30pm on a big screen and as usual we'll have a whole lot of cold beer and louzy snacks to get through the match. We hope to welcome as many people as possible for a great afternoon and (hopefully) a big party afterwards! See you all at the Hut!!! Go Holland!!! |
